Credit card processing for Detroit and Metro Detroit businesses

Simple provides credit card processing and point of sale to businesses across Detroit and metro Detroit at a flat 2.19% card-present rate with no per-transaction fee. The team is based in Troy, about twenty minutes up Crooks Road from downtown Birmingham and a short drive from Warren, Southfield and Royal Oak. Card-not-present payments, meaning keyed-in, invoiced and online sales, are 2.79%, and there is no long-term contract on either.

    We are actually here

Our office is on North Crooks Road in Troy, between Maple and Big Beaver, in the stretch of Oakland County where most of the region's independent retail and service businesses keep their accountants, suppliers and banks. That matters for a boring reason: when a terminal stops taking cards on a Saturday in Ferndale, somebody who knows your account can be at your counter, not scheduling a callback.

Merchants here reach a person in Troy. Same people who wrote your application, same people who loaded your inventory file, same people who answer when the receipt printer stops talking to the register. There is no tiered support desk and no offshore first line.

What Detroit area businesses pay to process cards

Take a boutique on Nine Mile in Ferndale running a $42 average ticket and about 1,100 card sales a month, which is roughly $46,200 in card volume. On the standard 2.6% plus 10 cents that Square, Clover and Shopify POS publish, that is $1,201 in percentage cost plus $110 in per-transaction fees, so $1,311 a month. At a flat 2.19% with no fixed fee, the same volume costs $1,012. That is $299 a month, or $3,588 a year, on a single register.

The gap widens as the ticket gets smaller. A coffee counter in Royal Oak with a $9 average is paying an extra full percent on every sale just from the dime, before anyone talks about the headline rate. A repair shop in Warren writing $600 invoices barely notices the dime and cares mostly about the percentage. Both come out ahead at 2.19%, for different reasons.

The full math, including how the fixed fee behaves at every ticket size, is on our lowest credit card processing rate page. You can also read the plan pricing on our pricing page, which starts at $99 a month per location.

Built for how metro Detroit businesses actually run

Business here is seasonal in ways a national processor never accounts for. January and February are quiet across Oakland and Macomb counties, then Mother's Day and graduation season put salons, florists and gift shops in Birmingham and Grosse Pointe into their heaviest weeks of the year. Dream Cruise weekend turns Woodward from Ferndale to Pontiac into a single long sales floor. Art fair week does the same thing to downtown Ann Arbor. Late fall belongs to the Thanksgiving parade downtown and the Small Business Saturday crowds on Nine Mile and in downtown Rochester. A system that cannot handle a 5x day and then sit quiet for six weeks is the wrong system for this market.

The mix here is heavily independent. Salons and barbershops through Royal Oak, Clawson and Madison Heights that need appointment booking tied to the register. Auto and mechanical repair shops across Warren, Sterling Heights and Dearborn that write an invoice now and get paid after the part comes in. Boutiques and gift shops on Nine Mile, in downtown Birmingham and along Michigan Avenue in Dearborn that live and die on inventory counts across a few thousand SKUs. Corner markets and party stores in Detroit proper doing high transaction counts on small tickets, where a dime per swipe is the whole margin conversation. Restaurants and coffee shops in Corktown, Midtown and downtown Ferndale that need tips, splits and a fast tap.

Michigan's 6% sales tax with no local add-on keeps tax setup simple, which is more than merchants with locations across state lines can say. Snow is the other local reality: from December through March we plan installs and swaps around weather, because nobody wants a register being reconfigured the morning after a storm when everyone finally comes out to shop.

Everything runs on one system, so a shop in Southfield with a counter, a booking calendar and a small online store is not paying three vendors and reconciling three reports. See the point of sale and payment processing pages for the full feature set, or read what credit card processing costs a small business before you compare quotes.

    Frequently asked questions

There is a local team. Simple is run out of an office at 1727 N Crooks Rd in Troy, off Crooks between Maple and Big Beaver. When a merchant in Royal Oak or Dearborn calls, they reach the same people who set the account up, not a ticket queue in another time zone.

Yes, anywhere in metro Detroit. We regularly drive out to Ferndale, Birmingham, Southfield, Warren, Sterling Heights and Dearborn to set up hardware, load inventory and train staff at the counter. Ann Arbor and the rest of Washtenaw County are covered too. Farther out, we ship preconfigured hardware and run the training over video.

Most metro Detroit merchants are approved and running within a few business days. Switching means an application, a bank account for deposits, and moving your product list over. We usually schedule the swap for a slow morning, keep your old terminal live until the new one takes a card, and stay on site through the first real rush.

It is the same. Card-present transactions are a flat 2.19% with no per-transaction fee whether you are in Troy or anywhere else in the country, and card-not-present transactions are 2.79%. There is no local surcharge and no negotiated tier that only some merchants get.

Oakland, Macomb, Wayne and Washtenaw counties, which covers Detroit proper plus Troy, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Birmingham, Clawson, Madison Heights, Southfield, Warren, Sterling Heights, Dearborn, Livonia and Ann Arbor. We serve businesses outside the region as well, but this is the area where we show up in person.
