Credit card processing for Michigan businesses

Simple is a Michigan company that provides credit card processing and point of sale to businesses across the state, from the Soo to the Indiana line, at a flat 2.19% card-present rate with no per-transaction fee. Keyed, invoiced and online sales run at 2.79%. The company is headquartered in Troy, and there is no long-term contract on any of it.

A Michigan company, working the whole state

Michigan is not one market. A gift shop three blocks off the water in South Haven and a machine shop supplier in Kalamazoo have almost nothing in common except the state they file taxes in. What they share is that most national processors treat both as an entry in a routing table. We are headquartered in Troy, and the support line, the underwriting conversation and the person who loads your product file are all in the same building.

Statewide, that means shipping preconfigured hardware anywhere between Monroe and Copper Harbor, running setup and staff training over video on the operator's schedule, and answering the phone during Eastern time business hours rather than a queue that follows the sun. West Michigan, mid-Michigan, the Thumb, the lakeshore and the U.P. all get the same account handling.

We are in metro Detroit in person as well. If you operate in Oakland, Macomb, Wayne or Washtenaw County, our Detroit and metro Detroit processing page covers on-site installation and local service.

What a flat rate does for a season-heavy year

Seasonal operators do not have an average month, so a monthly cost comparison misleads them. Consider a marina store on Grand Traverse Bay that does $310,000 in card volume across roughly 8,900 sales, but packs almost all of it into May through October. On 2.6% plus 10 cents that is $8,060 in percentage cost and $890 in fixed fees, which comes to $8,950 for the year. At a flat 2.19% with no fixed fee it is $6,789. The year ends $2,161 better, and every dollar of it lands in the six months when the money is actually moving.

The dime is the part seasonal operators underestimate, because their transaction count is inflated by impulse buys: bait, ice, sunscreen, a bag of fudge, a cider and a donut. A U.P. trailhead outfitter selling a $6 pair of hand warmers pays 10 cents on it, which is 1.67% of the sale added to the headline rate. Nine hundred of those in a season is $90 that exists for no reason other than that the fee structure was written for larger tickets.

The complete fee breakdown at every ticket size lives on our lowest credit card processing rate page, and plan pricing starts at $99 a month per location on the pricing page.

Tourism towns, off seasons and the businesses in between

Northern Michigan and the lakeshore run on a calendar most software ignores. A shop on Front Street in Traverse City makes its year between the Cherry Festival and the last weekend of color tour. Mackinac Island businesses open when the ferries start and close when they stop. Saugatuck, Holland, South Haven, Grand Haven and Petoskey all spike hard in July and go quiet in February. Then there is the second season nobody outside the state thinks about: snowmobile and ski traffic through Gaylord, Boyne and the Keweenaw, which turns a dead December into a busy one.

That rhythm has practical consequences. Staff are seasonal, so you are training new people every spring and want scheduling and time tracking that a nineteen-year-old picks up in an afternoon. Stock arrives in one or two big preseason buys, so inventory counts and reorder points matter more than daily replenishment. Cash flow is front-loaded and then flat, so you want the reporting to compare this July to last July rather than this month to last month.

Away from the water the state looks different again, and the same system covers it: agricultural suppliers and equipment dealers around Saginaw and the Thumb, orchards and cider mills through the fruit belt that sell retail on weekends and wholesale on weekdays, university businesses in East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Mount Pleasant and Kalamazoo that empty out every May, and furniture and design showrooms around Grand Rapids that quote work and invoice it later. See the point of sale and invoicing pages for how that is handled. For cost benchmarks by business size, see what small businesses pay to process credit cards.

    Frequently asked questions

Yes. Merchants run Simple in Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Petoskey, Holland, Marquette, Kalamazoo, Lansing and the Thumb. Hardware ships preconfigured with your menu or product list already loaded, and onboarding runs over video with the same person start to finish. Nothing about the rate or the plan changes because you are four hours from Troy.

It can. A shop that runs hard from Memorial Day to color season and then locks the door until spring keeps its account, its product catalog, its customer list and its reporting history in place through the closed months. You are not rebuilding the register every April, and you are not paying per swipe on a month with no swipes.

Yes. The reader pairs to a phone or tablet and runs on cellular data, so a stand at a summer market in Ludington or a cider mill wagon in the fall takes tap and chip the same way the main counter does. Sales sync back to the same reporting as soon as the device has a signal.

Northern Michigan and lakeshore towns lose connectivity more than anyone likes to admit, especially on a packed holiday weekend. The register keeps ringing sales offline and stores them, then submits the batch once service returns. Staff do not have to switch to a paper pad in the middle of a line.

It is. The company is headquartered in Troy, Michigan, and the people who build the product, write the applications and answer the phone all work here. Michigan's flat 6% sales tax with no city or county add-on is already handled correctly out of the box, which is a small thing that saves an argument at tax time.
